LED Etch-a-Sketch built without a microcontroller

This project is a wonderful example of what can be accomplished with a rather complicated logic circuit. It’s an Etch-a-Sketch made from a 16×16 LED grid. That in itself is only somewhat interesting. But when hearing about the features and that it is driven by logic chips we were unable to dream up how it was designed. There’s no schematic but the video commentary explains all.

The thing that confused us the most is that the cursor is shining brighter than the rest of the pixels. This is done with two different 555 times and a duty cycle trick. When you turn the trimpots the cursor position is tracked by some decade counters. Pixels in your path are written to a RAM chip which acts as the frame buffer. And there’s even a level conversion hack that let’s the display run at 15v to achieve the desired brightness. Top…

Fire piston

Hey guys the other day one of the members who are working on the Redbull project was talking about a Fire piston. I had never heard of this, so I decided to do some research. I found a video of one that is made of acrylic and really easy to make. I go camping alot and a way to start a fire without matches or lighter is something that would come in handy.

The package arrived from redbull today, and almost got sent back because they forgot to put my apartment number on the address label.  Luckily I stopped by the post office to check on it.  And OMG.

So many IC’s to learn, someone should post all the datasheets.

We’ve got until May 5th to make our creation and we’ve got to make a video of it less than 3 mins so minimal build video.  We’ve got a plan which we think will blow people away but I don’t want to give anything away so our competition gets a heads up so ask Kyle or Me.  I’m working on some stepper motor controls and this weekend we’ll start construction.  Let’s do this!

Redbull Creation Contest 2013 Here we come!!!!

This year UmmDorian was awesome enough to enter us into the 2013 RedBull Creation Contest. This years hardware is called the TURBULL ENCABULATOR!!

“The TurBULL Encabulator is our very own super simple, but extremely complicated, multi-function circuit board designed to give Makers a powerful tool in the creation of controllable LED lighting art and inventions. The Arduino-controllable board features a tri-axis accelerometer, temperature control sensor, as well as a 2nd generation reciprocating dingle arm (no, not really) in a Bulls and Sun shaped circuit board.”

H-Bridges

The other day someone asked me about building a large H bridge to power some 25+ amp motors. Well after finding this Tutorial I then researched some higher current darlington transistors. These are rated at 50A and 120V up from the TIP-147/142 rating of 10A and 100V the price per BJT is about 7 times higher than the TIP series but if you need high current there is a cost.

PNP transistor link ON Semiconductor  MJ11033G $10.29/ea

NPN transistor link ON Semiconductor  MJ11032G $9.65/ea

These transistors would take the place of the TIP 147 & TIP142 BJT’s other than that the board traces would need beefing up to handle 5x the current. Also since these are in a different package (TO-3 vs TO-220) the board layout would need to be redesigned. I would think about mounting them on large heatsinks then running wires to the board.
